A brother in Christ wrote to me:
I don’t have any spiritual gifts, although I want to serve the Lord anyway I can. How can that be since I don’t have gifts?
My Response:
Praise God. Hey (Anonymous), How are you?
I’m actually answering some messages this weekend. It should be fun because the Lord is with me. You don’t need to have spiritual gifts to be used by the Lord. There are two things the Lord seeks to do in a believer’s life. To establish them to love the Lord with all their heart, mind, soul and strength and to love other people like themselves (Luke 10:27). You cannot do the latter without first learning to love God abundantly.
We are all growing to love God, and the Holy Spirit works to have Him manifest in our lives. The highest spiritual gift above them all is showing Christ's love.
1 Corinthians 13:2 (NIV)
If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have faith that can move mountains, but does not have love, I am nothing.
The greatest testimony we can give people is our lives.
Mathew 7:22-23 (KJV)
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father, which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name have cast out devils? And in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
What is having gifts and doing miracles when people live as though God never gave them a law to obey?
Every believer has received the greatest gift, Christ Jesus our Lord. God in His abundant love gave us His most treasured possession, His Son. We are urged in scripture to pray for the greater gifts (1 Corinthians 12:31). I encourage you to read 1 Corinthians 13 that explains why love is the most wonderful spiritual gift; which God is working in all believers. What is love? God is love (1 John 4:8).
I urge you to seek the spiritual gift that is likened to love; it’s called wisdom.
Proverbs 9:10 (KJV)
“The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For by me your days will be multiplied, and years of life will be added to you. If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, and if you scoff, you will bear it alone.”
1 Corinthians 1:28-31 (ESV)
God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him, you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us WISDOM from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
We must put Christ in the center of everything. Continue to seek Christ, and He will manifest in you His will that has been planned before the ages (Romans 8:29).
Remember:
Praise God. Praying for greater intimacy with God is good, and He will give you the desire of your heart. 1 John 4:19 say’s we love Him because He first loved us. Your willingness to want to know more of God is an already answered prayer. The desire for greater intimacy started with Jesus. Thus the Holy Spirit will guide you to spend more and more time with Him, revealing revelations about Gods person. To know another human being, you must spend time with them. God is a person, and it’s a process to know Him intimately.
